Benjamin Crombie was born at 42 Fountainbridge. He was the son of Andrew Crombie (1761-1847), W.S. He attended Edinburgh High School and his name appeared in a list of medallists and Duxes in Dr Steven's History of the High School, under the heading 'College-Bailie Medallists for writing.' Within two years of Sir Walter Scott's death, Crombie drew and painted a striking full-length portrait of the great novelist, after only having caught glimpses of him in life. He is buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard in the family burial tomb.
