Businessman, administrator and patron of the arts. Entered the family business, J Sainsbury plc in 1950, becoming a Director in 1958. Retiring in 1992, he became Life President. In addition to his role in business he was extensively involved in the arts as a Director and then Chairman of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and served on the boards of Trustees for several major institutions, including the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery. The latter was the beneficiary of his family's gift of the Sainsbury Wing.
