Sitter in 20 portraits
Vivienne Isabel Swire was born in Derbyshire and moved to London with her family when she was 17. Her first career was as a primary school teacher but left in 1971 to form a partnership with Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols, (1946-2010). Together they opened a boutique on King's Road called Let it Rock which sold 'Teddy Boy' clothes. By 1974 the shop had been renamed Sex and Westwood began to sell her designs which would define the look of the punk movement. McLaren and Westwood's first catwalk show staged in 1981. Westwood was named Designer of the Year in 1990 and 1991 and her career to date was celebrated with a retrospective exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2004.
