Dame Mary Howarth (née Arden)

Born in Liverpool, Dame Mary Howarth (known by her maiden name, Dame Mary Arden) read law at Girton College, Cambridge before completing a Master of Laws at Harvard Law School in 1970. She was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in 1971 and admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1973. From 1971 to 1993, she was in full time practice as a member of Erskine Chambers, specialising in company law. Lady Howarth became a QC in 1986, and served as Attorney-General of the Duchy of Lancaster. She was appointed to the High Court in 1993, becoming the first female High Court judge to be assigned to the Chancery Division. In 2000, she was named to the Court of Appeal of England and Wales.
