Graduating in mathematics with first class Honours from Girton in 1921, Bertha Jeffreys worked with many of the leading researchers in quantum mechanics (a relatively new field at the time), including Max Born and Werner Heisenberg. After a period in Bristol, Imperial College, London, and again in Manchester as a Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, Bertha Jeffreys returned to Cambridge (1938), to an Official Fellowship and Lectureship in Mathematics at Girton. There she continued to publish important papers on quantum theory. However, her most widely known publication is the enormously influential text Methods of Mathematical Physics, written with Harold Jeffreys, whom she had married in 1940.
