Born 25 March 1817 at Swallow Street, Westminster, London, son of Richard Cox & his wife Margaret (nee Badger). The family name was changed by Richard Cox to Dicksee. John was the brother of fellow artist Thomas Francis Dicksee (1819-1895) and uncle of Sir Frank Dicksee, President of the Royal Academy (1853-1928). Exhibited RA 1850-1900. Head Drawing Master at the City of London School 1852-1897. John was the first curator of works of art for the Corporation of the City of London (later the Guildhall Art Gallery). He wrote a book on perspective in art "The School Perspective". Married Mary Ann Bernard 16 August 1855 at Hammersmith Parish Church. Died 20 September 1905 at Sheraton House, 4 Platts Lane, Hampstead, Middlesex.
