Best-known as the presenter of the flagship interview programme Parkinson (1971-1982, 1998-2007), Sir Michael began his career as a reporter on local papers in Yorkshire. After working at the Manchester Guardian and the Daily Express, he became a producer and presenter for Granada Television. On BBC radio, he presented Desert Island Discs (1985-88) and Parkinson's Sunday Supplement (1996-2007), where he is credited with raising the profile of contemporary jazz. He has also written regular sports columns for the Sunday Times and the Daily Telegraph.
