Psychoanalyst and writer, who adopted the pseudonym Joanna Field. Marion Milner trained as a psychologist; her early books were based on her own diaries and the first was A Life of One's Own (1934). Milner started practising as a psychoanalyst in 1943. She was also a talented painter; in On Not Being Able to Paint (1950) she wrote about the forces that prevent creativity. Her later book The Hands of the Living God (1969) was an account of a twenty-year analysis of a patient, and also focused on drawings by her patients.
