John Alexander Barbour-James

(1867-1954), Colonial official; author

Guyanese-born (of African descent), Barbour-James was a Colonial official serving in the Postal Services. He was transferred from British Guiana to the Gold Coast in 1902. At the time of his civil service transfer, he tried to relocate his family to be with him but this was not sanctioned by his employers. He moved his is wife Caroline Barbour-James to a comfortable life in London, visiting over the following 15 years to spend holidays with her and their 8 children. Following his wife's death (1917) he moved to London where he became an active member of several groups and causes concerned with promoting British understanding of black achievements. He remarried (1920) Barbados-born teacher Edith Rita Goring.
