The only sculptor to be a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Woolner first made his name with portrait medallions of Carlyle, Tennyson and other celebrated figures of the time. Portrait sculpture remained at the forefront of Woolner's practice, although he also executed occasional architectural and ideal works.
