Since graduating from Cambridge University in Natural Sciences, King has become a senior advisor to the Government and in 2015 became a Crossbench Peer at the House of Lords. After returning to teach at Cambridge after graduating, King took up a lecturing position at the University of Nottingham between 1980-1987. In 2004, King was the Principal of the Engineering Faculty at Imperial College London and in 1999 was appointed CBE for services to materials engineering. The engineer's research on carbon emissions became a major focus of her work after she was appointed to lead on the King Review, launched in 2007 by the government to examine how emissions can be reduced from road transport.
