Edmund de Waal was an apprentice to ceramicist Geoffrey Whiting while studying at King's School, Canterbury and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. De Waal studied Japanese at the University of Sheffield and was awarded the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation Scholarship (1991-1993). Solo exhibitions include Signs and Wonders at the Victoria and Albert Museum (2009). In May 2011, De Waal was awarded the Ondaatje prize for his book The Hare with Amber Eyes; a family biography as told through the story of 264 Japanese netsuke.
