Brigadier-General (NB not Major General) Reginald Hoare CMG, DSO was born on 18 September 1865 and died on 14 October 1947. Educated at Eton College and RMC, Sandhurst. He joined the 4th Queen's Own Hussars in 1887 and rose to command the regiment 1901-1905. WS Churchill was a subaltern in his regimental squadron and together they were in the team that won the All India Inter Regimental Polo Cup in 1899, as described in Churchill's autobiography 'My Early Life'. Her served during the Boer War as a staff officer. Throughout WW1 he commanded the 229th Brigade, part of 74th Division, which saw action at Gallipoli, in Egypt, and Palestine (under Allenby), being present at the entry into Jerusalem in 1917. The brigade was transferred to the Western Front in early 1918, when Hoare's war was ended by a severe wound in September 1918. He subsequently retired.

He married 28/10/18 Violet Eliza Reid Walker, elder daughter of John & Katie (Cartland) Reid Walker of the Walker Brewery family, Warrington. 4 children: Arthur 1920-2005, served 4 QOH 1940-54. John, served The Black Watch, MC 1944; KIA Malaya 1949. Robin. Served 4 QOH 1946-54. Rosemary. 1930-
