Born Australia (Tasmania?) 1900. Came to UK c. 1916 to go to Osborne House on Isle of Wight and become a naval officer. Distinguished naval career - initially in WW1 and then WW2. In WW2 was at Dunkirk where he helped bring people off the beaches and commanding officer of HMS Edinburgh when sunk in Russian waters - ship was scuttled having been damaged to prevent the gold it was carrying - which was being used to pay the Americans for assistance given to Russia (then an ally) to fight Germany. Was also the naval representative on the Tizzard Expedition. After WW2 served to c. 1952 when left RN due to ill health. At time of death in 1969 was Lord Lieutenant of Somerset.
