Mary Ellis

(1897-2003), Actress and singer

Actress; born in New York, she began her career on Broadway, playing to great acclaim in Arthur Hammerstein's Rose-Marie in 1924; married English actor Basil Sydney in 1930, and moved to London where she featured in a number of Ivor Novello's productions, including Glamorous Night (1935) and The Dancing Years (1939), for which she is best known. Ellis starred in several Hollywood films and continued to make appearances on the West End stage until 1970.
