Barbara Nockolds grew up in Saffron Walden, Essex where her father Alfred was a land agent. Her mother, Phyllis, was the daughter of William and Sarah Bell. The Bells were well-established local builders. Barbara trained at Guy’s Hospital. London, 1928-32 and joined the forces nursing service in 1944.
