Julian had an unusually close relationship with his mother, Vanessa Bell. She wished his upbringing to be as natural and un-dogmatic as possible; he grew to be an adventurous and reckless child. Vanessa repeatedly tried to discourage Julian from going to Spain and was devastated by his death.
