Fellow of St John's College, Oxford from 1948 until 1987 and Reader in Architectural History at the University from 1965 until 1987. Member of the Historic Buildings Council for England from 1970 until 1984 and President of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain from 1979 until 1981. Written widely on architectural history including editions of A Biographical Dictionary of English Architects 1600-1840(1954, 1978, 1995).
