(1928-1979), Prime Minister of Pakistan; lawyerSitter in 1 portrait
Pakistani statesman, president (1971-73), and prime minister (1973-77). Born of noble Rajput descent, like many Rajputs, his family had accepted Islam. Bhutto was educated in Bombay and at the University of California, Berkeley where he graduated (1950). After studying at the University of Oxford he practised law in England before returning to Pakistan to establish his own law firm in Karachi in 1953. In 1957 he was part of Pakistan's delegation to the United Nations. He was Commerce Minister (1963-6), in which time he sought closer ties with China in an attempt to distance Pakistan from Western powers. Outspoken, he opposed peace talks with India over Kashmir forcing him to resign from government and later founded the Pakistan People's Party. He was imprisoned for a year after denouncing Ayub Khan's government as a dictatorship. In the fight for East Pakistan independence which ended in Civil war and the birth of Bangladesh, he was initially arrested for electoral fraud but then later charged with the ordering of an opponents assassination which led to his execution.
