Thomas Baring

Thomas Baring was MP for Great Yarmouth then Huntingdon. He worked in insurance becoming the Chairman of Lloyds from 1830-1868. Baring made a substantial amount of wealth from the compensation awarded to slave owners after the abolition of slavery as he held several mortgages on plantations in then British Guiana. Despite declining the Chancellorship of the Exchequer in both 1852 and 1858, he still had great influence in politics and culture as Director of the Bank of England from 1848-1867 and Commissioner of the influential Great Exhibition in 1851.
