Nicola Virginia Adams

Sitter in 2 portraits
Born in Leeds, Adams is a record-breaking British boxer. She won gold at the 2012 London Olympics, becoming the first ever Olympic gold medallist in women's boxing. In Rio in 2016 she became the first British boxer in 92 years to successfully defend the Olympic title, beating three-time world champion Ren Cancan. That same year she became World Amateur Champion, making her the first female boxer to have won every major title: Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth. Adams was awarded an MBE (2013) and an OBE (2017) for her services to boxing, but announced her retirement in 2019, following an injury to her eye. As one of the UK's highest profile black lesbians, she has topped The Independent's Pink List of influential LGBT people and in 2020 became the first contestant on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing to compete in a same-sex pairing, with the professional dancer Katya Jones.
