Doreen Lawrence, Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon

Jamaican-born Lawrence and her former husband came to public attention after their son Stephen's murder in a racially motivated attack in southeast London (1993). They campaigned to bring the killers to justice, publicly criticising police response. A judicial inquiry (1999) concluded that institutional racism contributed to the failure of the police to solve the case. Lawrence has since promoted police reforms and founded the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust to develop community programmes in south London. She is a member of the board and council of human rights organisation Liberty and patron of the charity Stop Hate UK. She was awarded an OBE for services to community relations and made a life peer in 2013.
