Captained City to 1933 FA Cup final defeat versus Dean's Everton at Wembley Stadium. Whilst collecting his losers medal, Cowan informed guest of honour King George V of his intention to return to Wembley and kept his word as City defeated Portsmouth to lift the cup in 1934. Won 3 England caps and returned briefly to Manchester City as manager in 1946. Later worked as a sports physiotherapist, notably with the England cricket team.
