Baron Ijuin Goro

Japanese- born Ijuin Goro served as a cadet in the Taiwan Expedition, the Ganghwa Island Incident off Korea and the Satsuma Rebellion. Following this, in 1877 he was sent to study in England. He attended the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. After his promotion from sub-lieutenant to lieutenant he returned back to Japan in 1886 to join the Imperial Japanese Navy Genereal Staff. Working as a staff officer during the First Sino-Japanese War he became a close confidant of Admiral Yamamoto Gonnohyoe, the navy Chief. He was honoured with the title Baron in 1907 under the Kazoku peerage system, made an Admiral in 1910 and despite never having commanded a ship, a Fleet Admiral in 1915.
