A suffragist, elocutionist and parliamentary candidate, Martel migrated to Australia from Cornwall in 1879, where she and her husband joined the recently formed Womanhood Suffrage League. Elected president of the Women's Liberal and Reform Association and finance committee of the Australian Free Trade League, she became the first woman to stand as a candidate in the 1903 federal election. After returning to England, she joined the Women's Social and Political Union in May 1905 and became well known for her standing in parliament and publicising the democratic rights of Australian women. She was arrested with Anne Cobden-Sanderson at Parliament and sentenced to two months in prison in 1906.
