Willem de Passe
(1597 or 1598-1636 or 1637), EngraverArtist associated with 175 portraits
The son of Dutch engraver and publisher Crispijn Van de Passe the Elder and the brother of engraver Simon. His father was the founder of a publishing house in Cologne that produced portraits of European nobility and other prints. The family were forced to leave Cologne because of their Anabaptist faith. They moved to Utrecht, and in 1616 Simon settled in London where he established a successful portrait engraving practice. Willem joined him in 1621, and produced a total of seventeen portraits of princes and noblemen, most of them after life. These included a double portrait of James I and Charles, Frederick of Bohemia and his family, and the family of James I.
