Constance Georgine Markievicz (née Gore-Booth), Countess Markievicz

(1868-1927), Irish republican and first woman elected to parliament

Sitter in 1 portrait
Politician and suffragette who campaigned and fought for Irish independence. Countess Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth had a privileged but socialist upbringing in County Sligo. While studying at the Slade School of Art in 1892, she joined the National Union of Women's Suffrage. Moving to Dublin in 1903 encouraged her interest in nationalist politics and membership to the Irish Citizen Army. Arrested for her part in the Easter Rising of 1916 she was spared the death sentence on the grounds of her gender. Released in 1917, she was the first woman to be elected to the UK House of Commons.
