His great aunt was Jane Austen, writer of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. His parents were Rev. James Edward Austen-Leigh and Emma Smith. His grandfather was James Austen (brother to the novelist) and Mary Lloyd.
