Kirkland Laing

(1954-2021), Boxer

Sitter in 1 portrait
Jamaican-British welterweight boxer. Laing's career spanned over 20 years in which he boxed 56 times. Although nicknamed 'The Gifted One' he became known for underperforming in his fights, often failing to deliver due to lack of preparation. Ring Magazine selected one of his fights for the title 'Upset of the Year', a fight in which he won against Roberto Duran in a shock split decision. He won the British Welterweight title twice and won the EBU Welterweight title in 1990 when he knocked out Antoine Fernandez at Wembley. Laing retired at 40.
