American photographer William Eggleston is best known for capturing everyday suburban life in his home town of Memphis, Tennessee. His sitters include family and friends, but also musicians and artists. A pioneer of colour photography in the late 1960s/early1970s, Eggleston's first solo exhibition of colour prints was at the MoMA in 1976. 40 years later, “William Eggleston: Portraits” at the NPG was the first major exhibition to focus on his portrait photography.
