A miss Mary Arbuthnot is known to have visited Sweden in 1863 in the company of the anthropologist John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury, and a third unknown person. Nothing known about her relationship to Lubbock. She must have had an interest in at least archaeology and languages. During her stay in Sweden she started translating a book in Swedish by my great-great-grandfather, the zoologist and archaeologist Sven Nilsson, on the original inhabitants of Scandinavia. Longmans later refused twice to publish it. Perhaps just as well. His main theory was that Scandinavia had been colonized in the Bronze Age by Phoenicians.
