Heavily influenced by American soul singers such as Aretha Franklin, she reached the top twenty in the British singles charts with her hits Greatest Day (1999), Get Up! (2001) and Shoulda Woulda Coulda (2002). She has released a platinum-selling greatest hits album (2006), sang at the London Paralympics Opening Ceremony (2012) and is the winner of three MOBO awards. In 2013, she moved into musical theatre, taking over the lead role in The Bodyguard. She is an ambassador and campaigner for charities including Christian Aid, Stop AIDS and The Terrence Higgins Trust, for which she was recognised when she was awarded her MBE in 2006.
