Catherine Opie

(1961-), Photographer

Artist of 1 portrait
Based in Los Angeles, Opie examines various facets of American life, from the identities of individuals, subcultures and communities, to urban settings and natural surroundings. Her portraits are characterised by her interest in the language of painting and in Old Master European portraiture. Her Formalist style is evident in her careful composition, placement of light and high level of detail. She has had solo exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2008), the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2011), the Wexner Center for the Arts (2015), and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2016). Her first major European survey exhibition was at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Norway in 2017-8.
