Sitter in 50 portraits
Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Bankhead, made her stage debut in 1918. She travelled to England in 1923 to appear in C B Cochran's production of The Dancers. This was the start of an eight-year stay in which she appeared in 24 plays and established her reputation in productions such as Noel Coward's Fallen Angels and Michael Arlen's The Green Hat. Bankhead attracted a loyal female following of gallery girls who chanted ' Tallulah Tallulah' or ' Tallulah Hallelujah' when she appeared on stage.
