Simon François Ravenet

(1721-1774), Artist

Artist associated with 34 portraits
Ravenet studied engraving and etching in Paris, under Jacques Philippe Le Bas. In 1743, he moved to London to assist William Hogarth in the engraving of his Marriage a la Mode paintings. Ravenet remained in London for the rest of his life. The majority of his work was produced for large-scale publishers including Robert Sayer, John and Paul Knapton, and, especially, John Boydell. He also engraved the portraits of such eminent figures as George II, Alexander Pope and David Hume. Ravenet played a significant part in the London art institutions that were developing at the time. He sat on the committee of the Society of Artists in 1767 and in 1770, he joined the Royal Academy as one of only six associate engravers.
