Sir Simon Rattle is a British Conductor. After winning the International Conductor's Competition in 1974, he became Assistant Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony. Two years later he became Associate Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and conducted at Glyndebourne the following year. Subsequently he was Principal Conductor and Adviser of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1980 until 1990 and its Music Director from 1990 until 1998. He became Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in 1992. In 2002 he became the first Briton to take up the post of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
