Born in London, Caulfield studied at the Chelsea School of Art and at the Royal College of Art, later teaching at Chelsea. He took the stylization of such early modernists as Juan Gris, Magritte and Léger as inspiration for his images of objects and interiors. Adopting the anonymous techniques of sign-painting, he used flat colour and black outlines to iconicize clichéd art subjects. In 1964 he was included in the New Generation exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery and had his first solo show at Robert Fraser Gallery in 1965. His work has since been exhibited worldwide. Retrospectives include those at the Walker Art Gallery (1981); the Serpentine Gallery (1992-3); and the Hayward Gallery (1999-2000).
