Born in Leicester, Barnes worked as a lexicographer on the Oxford English Dictionary Supplement, after graduating from Oxford University. He was a literary editor and film critic before becoming a full-time novelist. Works include Flaubert's Parrot (1984), A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters (1989) and Talking it Over (1991). He has also published short stories such as Cross Channel (1996), translations and essays, and crime fiction under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh. In 2011 he won the Man Booker Prize for his novel The Sense of an Ending.
