Author of the James Bond series of spy novels. Ian Fleming joined Reuters in 1931, then went into the City (1933-9). During the Second World War, he was personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence and oversaw operation 'Goldeneye'. In 1945, he joined the Kelmsley Newspaper Group and took a holiday every winter in Jamaica at his home Goldeneye, named after his wartime work. He married his mistress Ann Rothermere, former wife of Lord Rothermere, in 1952. The secret agent James Bond, '007', made his first appearance in Casino Royale (1953). Fleming used each Jamaican holiday thereafter to write another Bond novel, including Goldfinger (1959) and Thunderball (1961).
