Sandra Blow

(1925-2006), Painter and sculptor

Abstract painter, Blow, was born in Stoke Newington, London. She began her art education at St Martin's School of Art aged just fifteen, followed by the Royal Academy Schools and the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome. While travelling in 1947, she met the Italian artist Alberto Burri who inspired Blow to create abstract works and collage. Her first solo show was at Gimpel Fils in 1951, she won second prize in the John Moore's Liverpool Exhibition in 1961 and in 1965. From 1960 to 1975 she taught at the Royal College of Art and was elected a Royal Academician in 1978.
