Bernard Kops

(1926-2024), Playwright

Bernard Kops was born to Jewish parents in the East End of London, the setting for his first play The Hamlet of Stepney Green (1957). He ran a bookstall at Cambridge Circus, near Gallery One at Litchfield Street. Colin MacInnes used Kops and his wife Erica as models for the characters Mannie and Miriam Katz in his novel Absolute Beginners (1959).
