Film director and writer; as a director his work included Bugsy Malone (1976), Midnight Express (1978), Mississippi Burning (1988) and The Commitments (1991); he produced, directed and wrote the screenplays for Evita (1996) and Angela's Ashes (1999). Twice Oscar-nominated, he won three BAFTA awards. He was a founding member of the Directors Guild of Great Britain and was appointed the first chairman of the UK Film Council in 1999. He was knighted in 2002 and in 2013 was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship in recognition of his exceptional contribution to film.
