David Ricardo
(1772-1823), Political economistSitter in 3 portraits
A political economist, Ricardo was influenced by Adam Smith's theories on the development of capitalist economies. In his On the Principles of Economy and Taxation, 1817, Ricardo discussed several ideas which became fundamental laws of economics. One such law related to anti-protectionism which led to the formulation of later free-trade policies and the Repeal of the Corn Laws. Noted for his independent thought, Ricardo was estranged from his family who were prominent members of the Jewish community in London after he married a Quaker in 1793. He subsequently became a Member of Parliament for Portarlington in Ireland.
