Originally an actor and producer in pre-war London in 1955 George Devine became the first artistic director of the English Stage Company. Together with his associate Tony Richardson he set out to revitalise British theatre by championing young 'hard-hitting, uncompromising writers'. In 1956 the company moved into the Royal Court Theatre where Devine directed the first play, Angus Wilson's The Mulberry Bush.
