The Dutch painter, Godfried Schalcken, specialised in distinctive nocturnal genre scenes and portraits in which the subject is illuminated by a single candle. He worked at the Court of William III and Queen Mary between 1692 and 1697. While in England, he enlarged the size of his paintings better to compete with his rival, Kneller.
