The 'Wentworth Papers' give an entirely different story of this. They say that Buckingham was approached by a Sailor who complained about not having been paid for one of Buckingham's campaigns. Buckingham kicked the man to the ground and killed him.
The following day, Fenton approached Buckingham and when Buckingham started to attack him, 'Stuck one up him'. They don't like it up them Mr. Mannering! Fenton should be raised up on a Statue, made a Saint and given an MBE. He did Henrietta Maria because Buckingham's death made Charles much more attentive, with lots of little Princes and Princesses to show for it. It wasn't assassination it was just a matter of putting England out of Villier's misery.
