John Young

(1755-1825), Mezzotint engraver

Sitter in 1 portrait
Artist associated with 57 portraits
Studied under Valentine Green, then worked with several of the painters who collaborated with Green, notably Benjamin West, John Hoppner, and Johann Gerhard Huck. He began to publish his own prints in 1785, which he traded with Pierre-François Basan in France. Young executed some eighty portraits after various contemporaries, including several notable portraits of boxers, but was best known for his engravings after West, Johann Zoffany, and especially Richard Morton Paye and Hoppner. In 1789, he was appointed mezzotint engraver to the Prince of Wales. In 1813, Young was appointed as keeper of the British Institution, a role that he held until his death.
