Sir Anton Dolin
(1904-1983), Ballet dancer and choreographerSitter in 23 portraits
Dolin was the first British male dancer to be acclaimed internationally. He appeared on stage in London as the Black Cat in Bluebell in Fairyland, 1915, and afterwards trained at the Italia Conti School and with Russian ballerina Serafina Astafyeva. Under the name Patrikéeff, he was engaged by Diaghilev to appear in The Sleeping Princess in 1921. He joined the Ballets Russes two years later and, after leaving the company, danced with Tamara Karsavina at the Coliseum and Ninette de Valois at His Majesty's Theatre. He was a principal dancer with the Vic-Wells Ballet, 1931-5. In 1950 he co-founded the Festival Ballet (later English National Ballet). He was knighted in 1981.
