Son of Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and sculptor Kathleen Scott, Peter Scott studied zoology, botany and history of art before attending the Royal Academy Schools. After World War II, during which he served in the Navy, Scott set up the Severn Wildfowl Trust. In the 1950s he helped establish the BBC's natural history unit, hosting the programmes Look on television and Nature Parliament on radio. In 1961 he co-founded the World Wildlife Fund, and from 1962-8 chaired the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. A prolific author and illustrator, Scott's first book was Morning Flight (1925) and his last Travel Diaries of a Naturalist (1983-7). Knighted in 1973, in 1987 he became Companion of Honour and a fellow of the Royal Society.
