With a background in dramatic arts Young graduated from Middlesex Polytechnic with a BA in Contemporary Cultural Studies (1988). Beginning her career as a professional actress (from 1976-1984), she appeared in the popular children's sit-com Metal Mickey which ran from 1980-1983. Young later gave up her acting career to become an arts administrator. In 1985 she became co-director of training and development manager at the Haringey Arts Council, a post held until 1989. She is Emeritus professor at the Middlesex University and the author of Fear of the Dark: Race, Gender and Sexuality in Cinema. In 2017 she chaired the judging panel for the Booker Prize. Young was awarded an OBE in 2001.
